The Schubert Fest
Founded in 2017, the International Schubert FestDortmund is an event hosted by the International Schubert Competition Dortmund in cooperation with the Stiftung Industriedenkmalpflege und Geschichtskultur. The Schubert Fest takes place biennially, falling in the years between the editions of the International Schubert Competition Dortmund.
The compressor hall of the “Kokerei Hansa” serves as an atmospheric backdrop, providing an ideal and unique venue for the festival. While the program is not exclusively focused on Franz Schubert, his compositional oeuvre—particularly his many hidden treasures that are rarely performed—remains at the heart of the festival’s programming. This intimate and deeply personal music by Schubert, combined with the massive machinery inside the compressor hall, turns every concert into a unique experience.
The cooperation with the Stiftung Industriedenkmalpflege und Geschichtskultur has enabled exciting further development, so that the three-day “International Schubert Fest Dortmund” is now regularly held together in the years between competitions under the motto “Classical Music Meets Coking Plant” (Klassik trifft Kokerei). By holding the Schubert Festival in the competition-free years, it has been possible to create a top-tier platform for prize winners to network and exchange ideas with other artists. The combination of these two event formats ensures the sustainable establishment of a very special cultural event in Dortmund.
You can find more information about the Kokerei Hansa here on the website of the Stiftung Industriedenkmalpflege und Geschichtskultur.
